Opt Out

As a current International Student studying at KPU, you will be enrolled in guard.me Insurance plan as of May 1, 2024. This plan is mandatory for students who are studying in Canada.

If you already have valid coverage through BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) you may be able to opt out of the guard.me plan once you have received your guard.me policy number.

For the opt-out to be accepted, you must successfully complete the opt out form, including the alternate insurance declaration and identify your start date and end date under MSP at the time you apply to opt out.

Your application to opt-out will be declined if:

• The period of coverage under MSP ends prior to the end of the term
• MSP coverage starts after your guard.me policy start date

If you submit everything by the deadline and qualify for the opt out, we will advise KPU of your eligibility and the charge will be reversed on your KPU account within 10 to 14 business days.

Opt out deadlines

• Spring term: January 31 (11:59 pm EST)
• Summer term: May 31 (11:59 pm EST)
• Fall term: September 30 (11:59 pm EST)

Opt out applications are only accepted for the current term and will not be backdated.

Once you submit your opt out form, you will receive a confirmation email to your KPU email.

When outside of Canada the mobileDOCTOR service connecting you to a Canadian doctor in real time remains available 24/7 for advice purposes only.

How It Works

2. Apply account coverage for family members

To add insured family members, click on “Patient Profiles” from the dashboard. In “Account Settings” under the “Coverage” tab, add the relevant guard.me policy numbers.

3. Chat With A Doctor

Click the “See The Doctor” button and a Maple doctor will respond to you in minutes. You can have your consultation by text, video, or audio chat.

4. Get a diagnosis, prescription, or lab requisition

Doctors can diagnose injuries and illnesses, write prescriptions, and provide lab requisitions, all within your consultation. Please note that only eligible prescriptions and lab requisitions are covered by guard.me and can only be provided if you are in Canada.
