Opt Out

Every international student in Canada is required to have health insurance to cover their emergency medical needs. The Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (“Sheridan”) orders guard.me insurance for every international student to ensure you stay healthy and safe. The charge is included on your Student Fee Invoice in mystudentcentre.

The cost of medical care in Canada is very expensive. Health insurance may help to offset the cost of healthcare in Canada. Your guard.me medical insurance policy provides emergency health insurance benefits for new emergencies such as illnesses or injuries, as well as additional benefits to support students should a serious injury occur or should hospitalization be required. More information about your student health insurance can be found here.

As a current international student studying at Sheridan, you will be enrolled in the guard.me health insurance plan as of September 1, 2020. All Sheridan students who are in Canada for the Fall (September) 2020 term must have an insurance policy. This plan is mandatory for students who are studying in Canada and is a condition of studying at Sheridan.

However, Sheridan recognizes that some students are studying remotely from their home countries due to COVID-19. If you are studying remotely from outside of Canada for the duration of your Fall (September) 2020 term (that is September 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020), you may apply to opt out of insurance coverage for the semester by completing the Opt-Out of Canada Waiver.

By opting out, you will not be covered by guard.me insurance if you arrive in Canada at any time between now and December 31, 2020.

If you opt out and you arrive in Canada before December 31, 2020, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have health insurance that is valid until December 31, 2020. guard.me offers early arrival insurance through https://www.guard.me/sheridancollege/department/early-arrivals. If you opt out and choose to come to Canada before December 31, 2020, you must purchase health insurance coverage that covers you until December 31, 2020. This policy must be purchased a minimum of two (2) weeks before you arrive in Canada and you must submit proof of your health insurance to Sheridan before you return to Canada.

The deadline to opt out is September 3, 2020.

If your opt out submission is approved, an insurance fee adjustment for one (1) term will be credited to your Sheridan Student Account Summary at end of September and shall be used towards Sheridan fees for future terms.
