From foreign words to the language of sport: guard.me bursary a slam dunk at the University of Winnipeg

The University of Winnipeg welcomes the generous support of guard.me International Insurance, which recently made an additional donation of $20,000 in support of an international student bursary. This bursary is awarded to full-time international students studying at UWinnipeg who are graduates of the UWinnipeg English Language Program (ELP).

“A big part of our mandate at guard.me is to provide ongoing support to our partner institutions and the students we serve,” said Clark Hortsing, Vice President Sales and Marketing at guard.me International Insurance. “Scholarships are a way of giving back to international students who have chosen to pursue a higher education at the University of Winnipeg.”

Since this fund was established in December of 2012, the bursary has been awarded to four international ELP students including Lucija Golubić, originally from Croatia who just completed her second year in the Kinesiology and Applied Health program at UWinnipeg.

“I really liked ELP, because I think it is a great base for any international student trying to enroll in university,” said Golubić. “It definitely gave me a lot of confidence in speaking with others, and it broadened my vocabulary. It was a great experience, which I would really recommend to anyone.”

Golubić is also is a Wesmen athlete, playing on the Wesmen Women’s Basketball and Soccer teams.Post-graduation, Golubić plans to pursue a career as an athletic therapist or personal trainer, or, potentially, as a coach.

“guard.me’s donation will provide financial support to international students in pursuit of their educational goals at UWinnipeg,” said Nigel Dixon, UWinnipeg Senior Executive Director, Strategic Enrolment Management. “We are grateful to for their generosity and commitment to international education.”
